About This Chart

The main chart tracks XPT/USD, the price of one troy ounce (31.1035 g) of platinum in US dollars. Use the toolbar to switch timeframes (1 hour to monthly), change to line or candlestick view, or add indicators such as the 50- or 200-day moving average.

Why Track Platinum?

Platinum is used in vehicle catalytic converters, jewelry, glass, chemicals, medical devices and hydrogen fuel cells. Mine supply is concentrated in South Africa, so both industrial demand and supply disruptions can move the price sharply.

Platinum/Palladium Ratio

The platinum/palladium ratio shows the relative value of the two sister metals used in autocatalysts. Palladium traded above platinum from 2017 until the two converged again around 2023–2024. Read the ratio guide.

What does XPT/USD mean?

XPT is the ISO 4217 currency code for one troy ounce of platinum (numeric code 962). XPT/USD is therefore the platinum spot price quoted in US dollars per troy ounce. See XPT/USD explained.

Is the platinum price on this chart live?

The charts are TradingView widgets that update during market hours, which run almost 24 hours a day from Sunday evening to Friday evening (US time). Some feeds can be delayed, and dealer buy/sell prices include a spread or premium over spot.

How do I convert the platinum price per ounce to grams?

Divide the price per troy ounce by 31.1035 to get the price per gram, or multiply by 32.1507 for the price per kilogram. Our platinum price per gram calculator does this for you.

Is platinum more expensive than gold?

Not at present. Platinum traded above gold for much of the period from the 1980s to the late 2000s, but has traded at a discount to gold since the mid-2010s. Compare them on our gold vs platinum price chart or read platinum vs gold explained.

What was platinum's highest price?

Platinum's 2008 peak, a little under $2,300 per ounce in March 2008, stood as the nominal record for many years. For the full timeline, see our platinum price history, and check the chart's "All" range for the latest levels.

How do I read the moving average on the chart?

The main chart includes a simple moving average (SMA). Long-period averages such as the 200-day SMA smooth out noise and are widely watched as a gauge of the longer-term trend. Learn more in how to read a platinum price chart.
